So, back to this song and dance. Well, let’s get this over with. How Evil are Tokyo Ghoul:re’s first two episodes?

This was different. We spent two series seeing how human ghouls could be and now Kaneki is a dove. Well, sort of. You see, he lost his memories because of that fight we never saw. That’s already unstable ground there. To make things more confusing, he’s aware that he lost his memories and has no intention of regaining them. But I’m getting ahead of my self. Let’s get into the meat of this. It’s been two years since the events of Tokyo Ghoul season 2. The Doves have seemingly gained control of most of the city. At least that’s the impression from these first episodes.

Kaneki has become a mentor of sorts for a group called Quinx Squad. They’re people just like him that underwent surgery to become half ghouls. I’m gonna stop right there and ask a question. Was Kaneki the prototype for this team? Think about it. He was the first. They say so, themselves. And let’s not forget the twins from last season. We get a few cool action scenes but the first episode ends with Kaneki powering up.

But as we quickly find out in the second episode, using his ghoul powers comes at a cost. Kaneki seems to have reverted to the first time he used his powers. He is even having hallucinations of his former self – begging to be set free. He fights better than any of his squadmates but it still seems like it isn’t enough.

Out of desperation, he unleashes even more power, but his old self-starts to show through. He even gets into his old habit of cracking his finger. It’s creepier than it used to be for some reason. I think it’s because the new Kaneki is so mellow and cool-headed while his older self is more… this.

Don’t worry. It gets even better. The guy he fights just happens to be one of his old allies. So on top of him almost killing the guy, he starts remembering his past as well. This causes the Doves to contain the situation by outnumbering Kaneki and beating the crap out of him enough to sedate him.

After he wakes up, Kaneki visits the guy who beat him off-screen in the last season and this is where he reveals he has no desire to recover his memories. Maybe that’s for the best, but I can’t help thinking we may get that fight in one of those memories. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Touka made a reappearance, so maybe he’ll get back together with his old friends?

I’m looking forward to the next few episodes. Maybe they will make up for that last season a bit. So far these episodes were about as Evil as Killer Robot Army (8).
