What’s better than one tournament? Two tournaments of course. How Evil is Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online.

In the world of guns and steel that is Gun Gale Online, LLENN has been a devoted, female solo player. She is obsessed with two things: donning herself entirely in pink and honing her skills with consistent gameplay. She soon discovers her love for hunting other players (a.k.a. PK), soon to be known as the “Pink Devil.” Meanwhile, LLENN meets a beautiful yet mysterious player, Pitohui, and the two click right away. Doing as she is told by Pitohui, she enters the Squad Jam group battle. –Crunchyroll

To be honest the reason I didn’t cover this right off the back was that I was concerned that this show would suffer from the same problems that the original show suffered. I was pleasantly wrong. This show’s protagonist is LLENN and we get to see her go from noob to expert gammer over the course of two tournaments. I’ll cover this chronologically to make it easier to follow the show dumps you right into the starting battle of the first tournament but the story starts a bit before that. Oh, I won’t be using LLENN’s real name just to make this easier on myself. Anyway, LLENN joins GGO looking for a game where she can be a short cute girl. In real life, she’s taller than most people her age and she has always wanted to be small. Soon after entering the game she finds out she has some killer pvp skills and eventually she runs into the series antagonist Pito but at this time she helps LLENN get even better at the game before forcing her into the Squad Jam tournament with a guy she’s never met.

That’s actually the first major clue that something isn’t right with Pito. LLENN gets stuck with this mountain of a man known as M. Yes just a letter it does mean something but that’s for later. M puts LLENN through boot camp so that he can gauge her abilities and come up with strategies for when they compete in the SJ tournament. It’s really more like training from hell but it doesn’t last that long.

Oh, I should probably mention this now. Most of the teams have six people in them for this tournament. LLENN’s team only has two which means from the start her team has a major disadvantage not to mention they have never really played together. Everything seems to be stacked against this ragtag team and just look at them if they could win you know it would be awesome.

M and LLENN do just that. They mop the floor with most of their competition. M even gets to spotlight his sniper skills by taking out a team that’s using hovercraft. LLENN gets down and dirty by hacking someone to pieces using just a knife. If this was a death game like the original it would probably be considered the most brutal as far as combat and dismemberment go. After the tournament, LLENN becomes friends with the second place team in real life and everything is great.

And them Pito happens again. M comes to ask LLENN for help in real life and confesses his love for Pito. You see Pito is kind of crazy, She wanted to play SAO when it first came out but had to do something else instead and now she regrets never being a part of the death game. That is as dumb as anything gets on this show. Pito wants to face death in the game so she told M is she dies in the game she will kill herself in real life. This forces LLENN to join the second SJ to save Pito from herself. But she won’t have M to help her this time M will be competing on Pito’s team. This makes LLENN get a new partner in the form of her best friend and noob to GGO Fuka. (This is what they mostly call her in-game not her full name.)

Yes, she is duel wielding grenade launchers. Once again LLENN’s team consist of only two people but this time everyone is out to get her. And with a noob on her team, this game is totally different. To make matters worse for LLENN Pito’s team is on the opposite side of the map meaning she has to fight her way to the other side of the map to fight Pitto.

The same applies to Pito but her entire team spawned on a mountain which they decide to hunker down on. As the battle progresses seven teams decide to team up to take the mountain which results in 42 players losing to a team of six. Pito kills 20 of them herself mostly using weapons she grabs from her enemies. And she doesn’t stop there after getting rid of the main fighting fore she snipes all seven leaders without mercy. It’s safe to say her and her team is final boss material.

LLENN’s team isn’t pulling any punches either. After a rough start, they start tearing through enemies teams like it’s nothing eventually meeting up with the second place team from the last tournament and joining forces to fight Pito’s team. They charged in foolishly allowing themselves to be killed to force LLENN to get serious and it workes leading to the most outrageous and brutal fight I’ve seen from this series.

LLENN has to finish Pito off by ripping out her throat using just her teeth. And here’s the best part LLENN had to do that because her hands had been chopped off a split second before that. As I said before if this were a death game… After defeating Pito LLENN meets her in real life and they become friends I guess. It turns out Pito is LLENN’s favorite music artist so to LLENN it’s a dream come true because she finally gets to attend one of the concerts she’s always wanted to go too.

And there you have my very condensed version of events. I would say this show is about as Evil as Villian (9). I was surprised by a lot of things in this show. The first being the double tournaments back to back that was a lot of fun to watch and the action never really stopped. Pito was a surprise although her motivations seem kind of dumb to me she was a really fun antagonist overall. Much better than most of the other antagonists from the original series.
