Soul Eater | Episode 1 Mini-Review | Soul Eater Summer

Let’s get this started.

Quick Thoughts

The character chemistry is on point from the very first episode. Also, Ohkubo is really good at setting up worlds and high concepts from jump. He did it with Fire Force and he’s been doing it since Soul Eater.

Favorite Screen Grab

Soul Eater

It just looks cool. I have no other reason.

Favorite Line

Soul Eater

The line, itself, may not be all that impressive. But what makes it great to me is the context. Learning what we learn about Maka literally right before that (which Soul is doubtless aware of) makes this more than just a moment where Soul’s outsmarting the “enemy.” It solidifies his bond with Maka in more ways than “I didn’t betray you” by showing off how well he knows her (because, rest assured, he planned this from the beginning) and it’s just great.

MVP: Maka

Soul Eater

Yes, Soul essentially proved he’s genuinely as cool as he purports himself to be with that one “twist.” But make no mistake. This is Maka’s show, at the moment. And not only is Maka, herself, pretty great, but I also love how we manage to learn about her through others as much as we hear from her own mouth. In fact, pretty much everything she explodes about, late into the episode, is basically stuff we can naturally infer, based on information we gleamed throughout. That’s pretty slick writing.

Wrap-Up

All right, there’s one episode down, fifty to go. Catch ya next time! Keep up the Awesome!

Take Care,
Voyager
