Well, that was… anticlimactic.

This show is really weirdly paced. It’s not necessarily bad, just different. I’ve never been someone who cared much about something “taking the risk to be different,” if it didn’t stick the landing. It’d certainly be fantastic if everything was new and felt fresh. But there’s nothing truly new under the sun. Therefore striving to be original is an expectation, not an exception. Trying to be different is not, itself, enough to earn you points with me. With that being said, I think this series has so far managed to be engaging enough that it’s not really a problem.

The contents of the episode were solid as always. There was nothing truly “bad” about it. I think the show could stand to shuffle some things around a  bit so there’s not so much “dead air” at times. But that’s minor. The conclusion to Tanjiro’s fight was cool. Nezuko playing Extreme Kickball with her opponent was neat. Though that fight had shades of “Hit the other guy really, really hard” until Tamayo ended it by goading the other one. That part did kiiinda bug me since we spent all the time on the buildup, but whatever. It served a purpose in establishing more of the rules about the world, so it was fine.

The episode didn’t really present anything new within its own bounds for the audience, though. Action is an expectation and Tanjiro’s compassion towards the demons is already well established. The best we got was Nezuko’s acknowledging Tamayo and her assistant as “human.” That was adorable and she continues to be the best thing about the show. Overall, the episode was Super Effective. It did what it set out to do and did it well.
