EvilBob: For all of those who aren’t aware of it. Boogiepop’s publishers decided to release five episodes this week. While we have no complaints about getting more Boogiepop I do have one thing to say. I hate you people.
(Voyager: No you don’t.)
EvilBob: …
Ry: That sounds like a complaint.
EvilBob: Last time I checked, you didn’t want to do this either.
Ry: I’m a volunteer, remember?
EvilBob: Whatever, So let’s see just how Evil Boogiepop and Others (2019) episodes 10 – 13 are.
Ry: Well, to start, it opened with a strange scene with Boggiepop and Echoes, and… what was going there exactly?
EvilBob: I think it was a supernatural realm or inside Touka’s head. Boogiepop did explain that this place is where they go in between missions so it’s possible Echoes got in, somehow. To be perfectly honest, we didn’t really need this part to make sense of the whole thing but it did answer the question of what happens to Boogiepop when they aren’t active.
Ry: Anyway, it then shifts to Scarecrow and his work with the Towa Organization and, apparently, their research into evolution.
EvilBob: His cover is a detective and he’s one of the more interesting characters introduced so far. He works with a girl called Pigeon and they are both artificial humans. He’s looking into someone who may be a defector of the organization and he has orders to kill them if he finds evidence that proves it. During his investigation, he runs into a younger Nagi. Yes, the Fire Witch that’s so awesome, later on, meets this guy when she’s younger.
Ry: So, apparently Nagi is evolving into Super Nagi or something and Scarecrow cancels the effect with a drug that he stole and that gets him hunted down by an assassin also working for the Towa Organization.
EvilBob: This is when it gets a bit confusing. Scarecrow randomly turning on the Towa Organization makes no sense in the context of this show. We don’t even know why he turned on them in this arc anyway. If we get that during future arcs, fine. But right now I see this as a weak point for this show. I mean he destroyed a facility to get that drug so it should be a major event.
Ry: So then as Scarecrow is bleeding out from wounds received during one of the many encounters with the assassin, he meets Boggiepop, granted before they’re known as a such.
EvilBob: So, remember that drug Scarecrow stole? It just so happens that Nagi’s psychiatrist finds what’s left of it. And carefully starts to use it on herself and lab rats. Doesn’t that sound like a sane thing to do?
Ry: Absolutely, nothing bad could come of it.
EvilBob: Turns out the Doc has developed a bit of a nasty side. She even verbally destroys one of her coworkers for fun.
Ry: And she picked up a new pastime – killing high school girls and chowing down on yummy brains.
EvilBob: I don’t want to know why she’s eating brains. Also, it seems she has become obsessed with fear. Or causing it. It seems she gets turned on by fear and that’s the driving force of the murders.
Ry: So she keeps scouting for more victims, adding more and more to her body count while still doing her day job, and meets Touka. Yes, Boogiepop Touka.
EvilBob: You see it’s apparently not normal to have a grim reaper living inside of you. Go figure. The meeting happens like any other. Touka gets questioned by the good doctor with her mom in the room, the doctor asks Touka’s mom to leave, and then Boogiepop shows up and declares that the doctor’s an enemy of the world. You know. Normal stuff.
Ry: Then we get a visit from an old friend, The Imaginator. Before she’s The Imaginator.
EvilBob: And this happens while Nagi is even younger and when her father is still alive. It all starts with Nagi’s father getting a letter from a fan who’s calling himself an enemy of the world. Of course, it’s made even weirder when the following investigation reveals the sender had a tragic accident and his family suddenly vanished.
Ry: Turns out the same assassin that killed Scarecrow also offs Nagi’s father.
EvilBob: She almost gets offed too. Her father begged the guy to not kill his daughter. Nagi, of course, never finds out about any of that. She just knows that her dad is dead.
Ry: So Nagi teams up with the same guy who killed her dad to stop the murders of the high school girls.
EvilBob: It’s an unlikely team, yes, but one of them has money and the other is a killer. Who else would be set to take on a killer other than the police who have been absent so far?
Ry: I don’t know. The army, maybe?
EvilBob: True. We haven’t seen them either. Anyway, Nagi finds out pretty quickly that her old doctor is behind the killings. And she calmly calls the cops, the coast guard, and every able-bodied person to help her stop the mad doctor.
Ry: And if you actually believed that, congratulations, you’re a normal person. What she actually does is grab herself a little arsenal and head out to fight on her own.
EvilBob: The assassin follows her but ends up getting killed in the process, leaving Nagi to face the mad doctor alone. Nagi is smart. She doesn’t stay in enemy territory she quickly moves the fight to a nearby swamp.
Ry: The fight in the swamp begins, after a bit, Nagi finally get some decent hits in with some stun batons.
EvilBob: By the time Boogiepop arrives the mad doctor is falling apart. The electric shock has destabilized the evolutionary process causing her to break down. All Boogiepop does is end her suffering.
Ry: And Boogiepop simply takes her head.
EvilBob: I think we’re done now. I sure hope this doesn’t happen again. It’s a possibility, given how there are five more episodes left.
Ry: Yeah, this was a little crazy.
EvilBob: Well, on the bright side there are only five episodes left. Even if they do this again it’d be the last time they can, if that makes you feel any better.
Ry: I hope they at least explain the weird scenes with Echoes on the next few. It looked like he was going back to Earth to protect it.
EvilBob: If he is, I have a feeling that the next five episodes are gonna get insane. I’m hoping for some fighting in the next five at least and, given that Echoes is headed back to Earth, we might just get that.
Ry: I do love the backstory we got for Boogiepop in these. I think it helps to define the character a bit better. Wonder what the next arc will be about.
EvilBob: I mean we could check out the old series. That might tell us what’ll happen next. But I’d rather go into it fresh. It’s more fun that way. Anyway, we should probably start closing this out huh?
Ry: Yeah with a collective rating thing or something?
EvilBob: We’re just gonna rate them as a group. This article is already long enough. I’d say that these episodes are about as Evil as a Killer Robot Army! (8).
Ry: Yeah, I pretty much agree with that.
