Where do I even begin with this thing? How Evil are the first three episodes of Magical Girl Ore?

“Love makes a girl stronger.” Saki Uno is working hard as part of the new idol unit, Magical Twin. The one she admires most is Mohiro Mikage, who’s the older brother of her idol unit partner Sakuyo, and he’s also a member of the top idol unit STAR☆PRINCE. She would be willing to do anything for him, and one day, those feelings brought on a miracle. Saki ended up turning into a magical girl when she strongly wished to protect someone… But what she turned into wasn’t exactly what she was expecting -Crunchyroll

Yeah, that about sums it up. It leaves out a few things like Saki getting pressured into becoming a Magical Girl by her mother who is apparently retiring from the business. And a Yakuza mascot that thinks he’s cute. That’s the second anime I’ve covered where the main character gets pressured into something. I could prattle on about that for a bit but that stuff isn’t all that important. The important stuff has to do with why we need magical girls in the first place. One word – Demons. So Saki transforms using the power of love and becomes a powerful dude? Well, that was unexpected. Or would be, if not for all the promo stuff revealing it.

To make matters a little more messed up, she isn’t all that magical. In fact, it seems the only thing magical so far is the transformation itself. Even her rod can only be used as a blunt instrument. She does have hairpin grenades. I guess those are magic but I’m not sure.  There is one other thing that seems like it might be magical. People seem to think Saki’s male form is cute and that includes the guy she has a crush on. By crush, I mean semi-stalker levels of staring. Not a cute relationship like we see in Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card.

I have to talk about the demons now. They all look the same. We’ve only seen two types so far and, for the most part, it’s hard to tell them apart from one another. If these are just grunts and the stronger ones look different that would be interesting but right now they’re the same. Like Power Rangers putties. That leads me to the tentacle demon.

I do wonder why Saki didn’t actually try to fight back though. She was doing okay with her fist the first time. This time they used the demon as a plot device to bring out Sakuyo.

Sakuyo uses the power of her love for Saki to transform. Saki asks her if it was the friendship kind of love, only to find out it’s not. Well. Okay then. We get a lot of backstory about her feelings too. That may have gone on a little too long, but at least it was adorable. After the flashback, Sakuyo tears apart the demon with her bare hands.

It ends with an announcement about a new magical girl idol group, thanks to the duo’s manager trying to merge both jobs together. That seems to have attracted someone’s attention but I don’t know enough to talk about him.  So Far I’d say these episodes are about as Evil as a Politician (7). It’s funny and all but it does have parts that make me uncomfortable. If you want an edgier magical girl show, check out CVoyage’s review for Cutie Honey Universe. It’s up to you.
