After all that waiting we arrive at the Christmas episode. How Evil is Mahoutsukai No Yome episode 16?

Let’s not waste time with me explaining things. We start off with Elias and Chise getting set up for winter.  It’s mostly a montage of them collecting random items and then hiding from a pregnant lady riding a centaur with horns. After that, Chise gets a letter from someone so she sneaks out of the house to meet with Alice, the wizard from before.

Alice and Chise have a problem, you see. They want to get their masters gifts but don’t really know what they like. They start their search but soon run into thugs from Alice’s past who want her to join them in getting high. Yeah, I thought she had a dark backstory, but that was more than I was expecting to get from her. And it just gets better as the episode progresses. Alice eventually tells Chise her backstory, which we see in a flashback.

The ladies run into a centaur that helps them decide on the gifts that they will bring back for their masters. After leaving Alice, Chise returns home and tries to sneak in. Elias angrily scolds her about the dangers of sneaking out. Chise points out that he is, in fact, angry, to which Elias is delighted to hear.

Chise then presents, Elias, his gift. Elias shuts down for a few minutes. I’m not quite sure if he was happy or shocked. It’s really hard to tell with him sometimes. Elias immediately opens the gift. He must like it because he puts it on immediately. He then gives her a present.

Chise opens the package to reveal a teddy bear halve the size of her own body. We also learn from Elias that he originally learned how to make them when Angelica was a child. He’s been making them ever since. That’s kind of a cute skill for Elias to have. I guess it does match his character. He is an odd one.

Chise turns in for the night while hugging her bear. Then we get this almost out-of-place creepy scene featuring Ashen Eye about to torment some child. Nice, peaceful, and creepy. Typical Christmas episode right here. All joking aside, this was a pretty solid episode. I wonder if we will get ol’ Ashy’s backstory next. He seems like an “I’m here to stay” type of character.
