Soul Eater | Episode 13 Mini-Review | Soul Eater Summer

One step forward, two steps back. One more step forward, two-DOZEN steps back.

Quick Thoughts

Soul Eater

Black Star’s still an idiot. Tsubaki’s team mom: confirmed. Oh. And Medusa’s plans are weird. Also, Maka and Soul are really awesome characters. There’s that.

Favorite Screen Grab

Soul Eater

It just looks cool. I mean, there’s the obvious factor of it being a good moment to signify Maka’s growth. But I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t mainly because it looked cool.

Favorite Line

Soul Eater

All right, I’m cheating. I’m springing for Tsubaki’s entire speech, here. In this day and age, that kind of clarity almost seems like it’d be worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize. And yet here we are.

MVP: Maka & Soul

Soul Eater

I can’t really just give this to one of them because the episode lives or dies by their character chemistry, the weight of their relationship and the depths of their internal conflicts coming into… well… conflict with one another. I especially love Maka’s particular issue. Being so obsessed with getting stronger for Soul’s sake. Ironically pushing him further away in the process and perhaps getting so caught up in it as to let it sort of blind her to other important things. It’s kind of a deconstructive spin of the standard Shounen theme of “I have to get stronger” and I really love that.

Wrap-Up

And that’s a wrap on another episode, folks! What do you guys think of Maka and Soul’s relationship? Let me know, down below. Catch ya next time! Keep up the Awesome!

  1. Maka and Soul are by far my favorite pairing in the series, troughout it all. A Shounen where not every problem is solved by getting stronger, or shouting. They embody it best to me. Love the pair, and though I have lost my interest in Shounen over the years, I can still think fondly of this.
