Soul Eater | Episode 2 Mini-Review | Soul Eater Summer

Round Two. Enter: The Idiot and his Keeper.

Quick Thoughts

Worst. Ninja. EVER. Probably big fun at parties, though.

Favorite Screen Grab

Soul Eater

Hey. Who showed Tsubaki my face when I have to deal with morons?

Favorite Line

Soul Eater

There wasn’t exactly an abundance of especially standout lines in this episode. Though that likely comes with the very direct nature of the lead. That said, I did appreciate this line as I’m a sucker for the ‘meaningful echo’ trope. I love it when a character calls back to something said earlier. Usually, it happens across multiple episodes, but this line pulls it off not even ten minutes after originally said, and goes a long way to showing that Black Star’s an arrogant clown, but not a total arse.

MVP: Tsubaki

Soul Eater

Yes, Black Star was… well… the star. He even has a protagonist complex. But there’s something I find endearing about Tsubaki’s confidence in him. That no matter how much of a buffoon he is, she still believes in him implicitly and puts up with his nonsense while trying to guide and support him to the best of her ability. This would’ve worked out a whole lot differently to me on a narrative level if she had no faith in him at all, frankly. I likely would’ve been less inclined to put up with him, myself. But her confidence winds up being rewarded (or at least proven) and it sells me on their companionship as a whole.

I remember the first time I watched Soul Eater and how disappointing I found this episode. Episode one had introduced the coolest duo I’d ever seen with Maka and Soul and then they were gone and we had these two. Having watched the series multiple times they’ve definitely grown on me and now I can watch this episode fondly knowing how these two will grow, but it was still a rough introduction really as Black Star is very hard to take.

Oh yeah. I can definitely see how he’d be a problem for people, coming into it. I only really tolerated him because of Tsubaki, even then. But yeah, he does grow on ya.

The first three episodes of Soul Eater would never survive today with so many seasonal viewers doing a three episode test on a series. Makes you wonder if they ever rebooted the series how they would start it these days.

Probably not. Though I’ve never really been one to use the Three-Episode rule anyway. I just go along with stuff till I get tired of it. But I could definitely see it dropping off of the seasonal radar, only to become a cult classic or something when people discovered it went for some 50 episodes and learn how good it inevitably gets.
