Time Flies When Anime Is This Good | Spring 2019 Week 8 | Weekly Anime Redux

Man, the season sure has come and gone. We’re already almost done with it? I guess it’s as they say.

Featured Shows
Kimetsu no Yaiba (Episode 8)

The doctor thing is actually really intriguing and I’m looking forward to seeing the upcoming action sequence, as well as the fulfillment of the little fetch quest Tanjiro just got assigned. Though I can’t say the scene of our big bad just murdering a few random people was exactly a hallmark of the show’s writing.

Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai (Episode 8)

Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai

A reasonably amusing first skit, followed by yet more confirmation that Uruka is best girl. I’m very much enjoying this.

Unfeatured Shows
Black Clover (Episode 84)

Black Clover

Real talk, this might’ve been the best episode of Black Clover to date in terms of animation. And it even does a decent amount of nice character development for Asta and Yuno in the thick of their little rivalry. A solid offering that this show generally remembers to deliver once or twice a season. Super Effective.

Fruits Basket (2019) (Episode 8)

Fruits Basket

Tohru. Has. THE BEST. Friends. Ever. Super Effective.

One-Punch Man II (Episode 7)

One-Punch Man

The tournament reaches its apex and things now get interesting, on that front. But the reveal of the monster seeds (I think that’s what they were called. I honestly forgot and couldn’t be bothered to check again) was also pretty cool, giving us some more background into where they actually come from. The featured battle of the episode was well executed. Especially when giving us a good reminder that Saitama’s actually a pretty cool guy. Super Effective.

Kenja no Mago (Episode 7)

Kenja no MagoKenja no Mago

Shin’s “overpowered” nature is actually being used as a narrative device in this show, and I love every minute of it. They’re not just letting him be overpowered and hand-waving it. They’re explaining it, making it less special, and actually discussing the ramifications of his abilities. It’s just so refreshing. BUT. This show’s pacing continues to be really, really weird. Not bad, just weird. Super Effective.

Carole & Tuesday (Episode 7)

Carole & Tuesday

The girls go on a rip-off American Idol, though it’s just the auditions, in this episode. And I’ve gotta say, I found myself very much liking it. Despite our not getting to actually see the music performance they put on, there was a lot I was liking. The parallels being drawn between Angela’s journey and that of the girls’ was a major factor. I like Angela despite her somewhat bratty behavior, which is why the promise of them getting to cross paths intrigues me. And the tiny peak we get into her background is exceptionally powerful, in its own right, I’d say. But it’s overshadowed by the actual focus of the episode, which is how troubled Tuesday feels upon learning more about Carole and discovering that, for all they’ve been through, she really doesn’t know Carole at all. It was just a fantastic episode with some heartwarming moments and some somber bits handled extremely well. Super Effective.

Older Shows
Kotoura-san (Episode 8)

Kotoura-san

Kotoura’s sick and Manabe gets to take care of her while she has no mind-reading powers? Well, that can only go horribly. To his credit, it kinda did, but it ultimately turned out fine. The not-a-date bit at the end was pretty cute, as well. But, oh boy, the teaser of the next episode does, indeed, promise a preeetty dark turn, going forward.

Achievements
Overall Episode Medalists

Carole & Tuesday brings home the Gold, this week. It’s been exceptionally good, all season. But contending with a certain other show hasn’t done it any favors. This week, that wasn’t the case, however, and it managed to churn out a nice and emotional, but still fun episode that I quite enjoyed. Black Clover stepped up its game, this go around. As it usually does, around this time every season. And what it gave us was probably the best animation the show’s seen, so far. What’s more, some good character building, as well, earning it the Silver. Fruits Basket dropping down to Bronze really shouldn’t be taken as a black mark. The episode was fantastic, delivering the strong, emotional story beats that the series is known for. But the prior two episodes managed to be narratively exceptionally strong and also just a lot more enjoyable overall, for me, while this episode was mostly just a narrative homerun… again. Perhaps it just comes down to my mood. Sometimes I want to have fun while being narratively stimulated.

MVP: Yuno

Black Clover

Seeing the upward trajectory of this character actually take form in a legitimately noticeable fashion, after so long, as nice. And there’s not denying that the leap he made was an excellent one that lent a lot to the episode. Being current on the manga, I know that this chapter in it is actually nowhere near this visually engaging. In fact, the entire fight was a lot shorter. So seeing them actually take up the reins and exploit what’s in the actual chapter was great. And certain additions, like Yuno’s determined dialogue and shows of his actually struggling against his opponent – even in his new super mode – made the entire thing that much more enjoyable.

Unique Achievement: Shonen Blood Activated

Kimetsu no Yaiba

Nezuko. Is. Adorable. Period. And I was right there with Tanjiro when he suddenly turned into Asta, for a minute, to defend her.

Unique Achievement: Best. Disguise. Ever.

Carole & Tuesday

Right now, Clark Kent is shaking his head at this poor girl.

“And I was right there with Tanjiro when he suddenly turned into Asta, for a minute, to defend her.”

Glad I’m not the only one who thought that! I don’t mean that in a negative way, but wow, they both can get excited!
