Kimetsu no Yaiba (Episode 5 – 6)

The longer this goes, the more I enjoy Tanjiro’s character as a much more reserved Shounen Protagonist. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to enjoy one of those. Meanwhile, the show still maintains a sense of humor. I like that it kinda harks back to an older generation of anime, while still having a modern style of its own.

Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai (Episode 5 – 6)

Careful, Uruka. A challenger approaches, and her name is Rizu. No worries, though. You’re still best girl. For now, at least.

Unfeatured Shows

Black Clover (Episode 81 – 82)

Episode 81 was the beginning of the confrontation between Asta’s team and Langris. Yes, just Langris. Not his team. But the thing I was most looking forward to was seeing how they’d adapt Zora’s (Xerx’s) backstory and the stuff about his dad. All-in-all, they did a pretty great job of it. And the dude really is the perfect seiyuu for the character. That episode, itself, was Super Effective. The subsequent episode, though, was just a Charmy gag episode. Feel free to Pass on that one. I’ve already watched this week’s episode and will cover that in the next WAR.

Fruits Basket (2019) (Episode 5 – 6)

I’m going to say very little about this. These are two genuinely beautiful episodes, each for entirely different reasons. Tohru is a gift and a far better person than I. And the purity and heartfelt nature of the friendships she forms are fit enough to thaw my heart on a weekly basis. Both weeks – both episodes – World’s Finest material.

One-Punch Man II (Episode 4 – 5)

I… really think they’re shooting themselves in the foot, regarding Garou, not including pivotal character establishment from the manga. It hurts his portrayal in the anime, when his manga rendition is, so far, much more complex and interesting. Still, these two episodes were good fun, showing off more of the show’s comedic and narrative ability beyond the “one joke” that people shallowly write this series off as the only thing it has going for it. Good, Super Effective episodes with some good intrigue.

Kenja no Mago (Episode 4 – 5)

This show… is easily one of the most fun ones of the season, so far. The action’s actually really good and the comedic timing is just superb. I also like how it’s an Isekai that’s not really trying to have a harem angle, instead going for one, steady love interest. Also, I dig their take on the “overpowered protagonist” angle. I’ve personally never found overpowered characters to be a problem (I find we tend to put far too much importance on actual, physical obstacles when psychological and emotional hurdles can easily be just as valid). The two episodes were solid. I’d go as far as to call them both Super Effective, even.

Carole & Tuesday (Episode 4 – 5)

I am thoroughly enjoying this. I come from a very musical family. So while I may have limited knowledge of music on a technical level, I do have an ear for it and do know a lot of trivia. The references throughout the show are great, especially while they were brainstorming ideas for their music video. Even the title of the episode – Video Killed the Radio Star – was a fun bit of music trivia. Also, a really nice depiction of a healthy and amicable relationship between two adults formerly in a relationship, topped off with genuine well-wishes from one for the other’s new relationship. And a lesbian one, at that. I dug it. The most recent episode didn’t feature anything quite as insightful, but I still appreciated what it was doing, showing the girls continuing along their path to “stardom,” running parallel to Angela’s journey. It’s a very interesting dichotomy between the two approaches. I’m looking forward to seeing where, exactly, they overlap. Also, the stuff with Tuesday’s brother was nice. Two really Super Effective episodes.

Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu (Episode 5 – 6)

Show’s cute. There’s… really not much more I can say on that front. I like Nako, I guess? Also, the teacher’s amusing. Otherwise, they’re just good episodes for Easy Viewing.

Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san (Episode 4 – 5)

But no show is really better for Easy Viewing, this season than this one. Although, having gotten caught up on the manga, I was waiting for Shiro to show up. Her youthful arrogance is amusing and her debut didn’t disappoint.

Older Shows

Kotoura-san (Episode 5 – 6)

Two fairly light episodes, this time. Though the most recent one teased that, hoo boy, is there drama ’round the bend. Moritani’s induction into the group was a nice touch, though. Especially seeing as Kotoura seems more open to forgiving and accepting her presence than anyone. The mark of a truly compassionate and empathetic soul, if ever there was one. It can be easy to forget that she was the victim of Moritani’s bullying. These episodes, though, were pretty good Junk Food.

Once again, only last week’s winners will feature, here.

Overall Episode Medalists

Fruits Basket taking the Gold should be the most obvious thing ever, at this point. From an emotional standpoint, that episode was just beautiful. She has the best friends. Carole & Tuesday finally makes it into the awards section. Actually, it would’ve been in here the previous week as well, had I been able to do a recap at that time. Taking the Silver is a noteworthy accomplishment, given the competition. And, really, this episode just showed a very nice technical mastery to enhance the overall narrative, on top of a solid musical performance. The narration is still potentially heavy-handed, but the bit at the end I actually really enjoyed. Bokuben takes the Bronze from Kenja no Mago, this time, albeit barely. There’s not much for me to say except that this show’s just fun. And while it’s competitor for this accolade has the same thing going for it, I laughed more at Bokuben, this week, than I did its competition.

MVP: Tohru

I… honestly can’t not give it to Tohru, this time. Except it’s not because she stood out in this episode. Because everyone in this episode was fantastic. But, really, no other show had one character more-or-less carry the entire thing. And Tohru had more of an individual impact in the quality of her show’s episode than the others did. So she wins by default. But that isn’t to take anything away from her. She was as wonderful as ever.

Unique Achievement: Revolutions Per Minute

Seriously. Did anyone else see how many times that demon’s head twisted? Nezuko has definitely not been skipping leg day.

Unique Achievement: Side Character-Audience Synergy

Go on. Tell me you weren’t thinking exactly what they were. I sure as hell was. I damn near started my own Isekai Adventure, just to join them in their calling him out.
