Golden Kamuy Episode 19 Recap | Is It Evil?

The fellowship of the weird-and-messed-up keeps growing. It seems like they’re gathering meat shields for the main characters, at this point. How Evil is Golden Kamuy’s 19th episode?

Well, Sugimoto’s group just gained three more people. I’m glad to see more of them becoming relevant, although it does make me worry that people are going to start being killed off. I still don’t trust this show and it’s given me no reason to yet. Tanigaki and his weird group have finally met up with Sugimoto’s to tell Asirpa that her grandmother is preparing for death. We also know that Inkarmat is working with Lieutenant Tsurumi in some capacity, which will most likely lead to trouble in the future.

The united group decides to take a break in an Ainu settlement before moving on to the place they’re supposed to meet up with Hijikata. I’m guessing that reunion won’t go as smoothly as this one. There’s got to be a reason it’s taking a while to get back to him. We even saw Nihei’s dog make a return. Apparently, he’s following Tanigaki around because of the gun he took. The dog still hates Sugimoto though.

We even got a little from Lieutenant Tsurumi’s group, although they didn’t do much in the grand scheme of things. I think we also found out that Lieutenant Tsurumi is either gay or bisexual too. It’s hard to tell when this series seems to play with gender norms, every chance it gets. Of course, in his case, it could just be that or he’s acting. He’s pretty manipulative. I don’t know which way they’re taking it.

Now, we did get another flashback. this time it showcased. Ogata’s past and, boy, was that screwed up. You see, Ogata’s father abandoned him and his mother before he was born. So most of his childhood he had to deal with his mother going insane and only cooking one meal that his father loved in hopes that he’d come back. He tried to fix that by going hunting but his mother wouldn’t cook what he killed. So he did the unthinkable and poisoned her. Yup. He was a cold-blooded killer back then too. Though I guess they play to the idea that it was out of pity, but still. Yikes.

It gets even better, though. He eventually found his father and killed him too. Well, it’s implied that Turumi led Ogata to him. It seems his own mother was a mistress and not the wife of the guy. Of course, that doesn’t lessen what Ogata did by any means, especially when he brags about killing his own half-brother by shooting him in the head. I think he may just be the most messed up person on this team.

Oh. And I think they may have been hinting at a beach episode for the next one. They gave us subtle clues. I could be totally off with this one, but It just seems like they’re trying to tell us something with the way this one ended. I hope I don’t look like a fool by misreading it. I just think it might’ve been a little on the nose about it.

Overall, I’d say this episode was about as Evil as a Villian (9). If you have time make sure you check out the latest Bulletoon Weekly. Well, that’s all I have for you today. Thanks for letting me waste your time, people.

Golden Kamuy’s second season is on Crunchyroll.

Would you say Ogata is a case of nature or nurture with his actions? Had he been born to a loving family would he still become the twisted wildcard we all know and love?

He’s my favorite kind of villain. The BASTARD villain, illegitimate and discarded. Classical yet understandable.

They cut a lot out about his brother. Ogata initially tried to befriend his brother and even took him to a brothel. Yet his brother was known for being so honorable and moral left the brothel without doing anything and was chosen to carry the flag of his regiment. It’s said that if the flag bearer is a virgin he’ll never get shot. He lead men into battle on several occasions but refused to ever kill. Ogata tried to get him to kill a prisoner but he refused instead trying to appeal to Ogata’s humanity. After that Ogata gave up trying to defile his brother and finally killed him the same way in the show.
