SSSS.Gridman Episode 4 Recap | Is It Evil?

Aw, look. Akane and Rikka are bonding. How Evil is SSSS.Gridman’s fourth episode?

SSSS.Gridman
Studio: Trigger
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Mecha

This time we start things off with Akane still fuming about her last loss. Apparently, she still doesn’t know that Gridman is Yuta. She does suspect that to be the case so I’m a little confused as to why she doesn’t just target Yuta, to be sure. I guess there might be some method to her madness. She’s playing things safe and investigating his friends, first. Or maybe she has a thing for Yuta so she doesn’t want to kill him? Either way, she seems to not be quite as crazy as she seemed before.

Speaking of Yuta, it turns out that he might just like Rikka. He got awfully nervous when Rikka and her friends went to see those college guys. I love how Max kind of called him on it too. We also got another hint that they might have been close before he lost his memories. No Idea how close just yet. I assume he’ll remember, eventually. Then maybe he won’t be so awkward about this kind of thing.

Akane wasn’t just making friends, either. While investigating Rikka, she decided to join Rikka and her friends to visit the college guys. If you remembered how quickly she can get angry, you probably automatically thought that someone was about to get murdered by a Kaiju. And you would be right. The group of guys sets her into a rage that can only be fixed with their deaths. But this time Akane does something clever. She makes a Kaiju that can mask its presence from Gridman… somehow.

Akane’s new Kaiju kills three of its victims without Gridman even knowing about it. If Rika didn’t follow up with her friends, they wouldn’t have found out about the attacks at all. Rikka even tries to save the last guy. I mean, that’s brave but what did she expect to do? Calibur shows up in time to save them both, so I guess it worked out. With the Gridman Alliance aware of the new kaiju, Gridman springs into action. Anti even shows up, making things even more complicated. So all of The Neon Genesis Junior High Students jump in to help.

But something goes wrong with the computer, freezing them all in place. I think the computer crashed because too many of them tried to go through at the same time. Ah, technology. Am I right? It seems like their operating system needs an update. That or they need more RAM. It is an old computer after all. With the system failure, Rikka comes through with a hard shutdown.

With the computer restarted, they decide it’s best for Max to go through to assist Gridman again. And the fight goes pretty fast after that. This time they finish the kaiju with a flying kick. I kind of wanted it to be a punch again. I do have to point out that Rikka starting to think that she’s somehow responsible for the Kaiju. Hopefully, she figures out that it’s Akane that’s pulling the strings. I hate it when characters blame themselves for things that aren’t their fault.

Overall, I’d say this episode is about as Evil as a Villian (9). If you want some more action check out my recaps for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind. Well, that’s all I have for you today. Thanks for letting me waste your time, people.

SSSS.Gridman is on Crunchyroll.

Keep It Classy,
