Conception Episode 2 Recap | Is It Evil?

Well, I got to give them credit. They got me good with that first episode. How Evil is the second episode of Conception?

Well, I don’t hate this show now at least. The first episode was mostly a farce from what this episode has told us. I do have to say that stupid raccoon thing needs to go away. He’s the least entertaining thing about this show so far. He overkills the jokes to the point that they are tasteless and he just won’t shut up. Anyway, my misgivings with this show aren’t totally gone. The whole “relatives with a questionable relationship” thing still pushes the wrong buttons for me. Yeah, yeah “It’s not as taboo in Japan,” but that isn’t really an excuse to me.

And no, I haven’t totally forgiven that first episode. I think this show is trying to push things way too hard and get to places that should take time way too quickly. For instance, Itsuki and Mahiru accepted their roles and were willing to commit incest just based on what they were told by perfect strangers. How do you just accept something like that instead of trying to find a way out of it? And then there’s the Love Ritual.

Oh, it’s not? Then why did where they almost naked on a bed? I’m still not okay that Itsuki and Mahiru thought it was a sexual act, to begin with. It makes it seem like it was some kind of hazing that everyone is in on. It’s just one of my many gripes.

I don’t hate all of this show though. The other maidens seem nice but it was creepy that, the pervcoon was trying to set up Itsuki with one of them as quickly as he could. He was even employing all kinds of romance tropes to make it work. At the end of the day, he got what he wanted though. Itsuki had a grand total of two-star children.

And now here goes the part that does feel like the game I played. Itsuki ends up taking his children into the labyrinth for their first try at cleansing the impurities. Now here’s the thing. The only ones with any training are the kids, at this point. Itsuki has only fought the one time, so far. They go in without any healing items to assist them.

By now you probably know where I’m going with this. Itsuki and his sons are a basically a level-one team of noobs, venturing into a level 20 dungeon. There’s only one way that’s gonna go. Badly. Both star-children are wiped out in the first monster encounter, leaving Itsuki with the job of carrying the figures they turn into to.

Overall, this episode is about as Evil as a Career Criminal (3). If you can put up with that stupid pervcoon this might be the show for you. I’m almost certain this one won’t survive the first culling. If I would’ve known it was going to be like this I wouldn’t have picked it up. If you want something with more substance, check out what Voyager’s got going.  Well, that’s all I have for you today. Thanks for letting me waste your time, people.

Conception is on Crunchyroll.

Keep It Classy,
Evil Bob
