Behold the straw that broke this camel’s back. How Evil is the 10th episode of Holmes of Kyoto?

I don’t know why I do this to myself. I gave this series soo man chances and this is how it repays me. If it isn’t obvious this will be my last recap of this show. I would’ve kept going if it was only boring but it just had to annoy me with this episode. We’ll talk more about that later though.

The story begins with a New Years celebration in the shop. It must’ve been preparation, last time, then? The shop owner has everyone wearing traditional garb for the event and I do mean everyone. We don’t get to see a lot of the party as it’s basically just a montage. Another thing that this show does too much of. We see them whenever there’s a slight chance of any fun. And this is one of my major gripes. The characters aren’t the problem. The problem is we don’t really know any of them. We don’t get to see them really having fun without it being a montage.  I think that is part of why this show is so boring.

And then we have the cases. The non-existent mystery element of the show. All which are solved way too quickly to be interesting. You can only keep things easy for so long before it becomes boring. The stakes should’ve risen as the show progressed. The problem was they never did. Holmes knows way too much. To be compared to Sherlock at all is laughable at best. Sherlock struggled to solve some of his more famous cases. Because they were challenging and required actual deductive reasoning skills. The appeal isn’t that he knows everything. Sure, he knows a lot, but the appeal is that his deductive reasoning ability is extremely developed. This Holmes knows all. And that is the main problem with the mystery.

The 10th episode had a way around Holmes and they refused to use it. It seemed like this episode was set to introduce a supernatural element. And not with just one thing. There are two moments where that would’ve added some intrigue to this show. One such example is the doll that the episode was seemingly based around. The thing was moving and crying.

Of course, Holmes ruined that one just by being in the room. And then there was that bit about his grandfather being cursed, which was also thrown away as quickly as it came up. I’m under the impression that a supernatural element could’ve saved this show, had it been implemented much earlier. Holmes only really knows art so what would happen if he had to deal with haunted art pieces? Even Mori could do something with that.

Anyway, We more or less got the same thing we’ve gotten from the beginning of this show. I wish it weren’t the case. The show still has it’s charming moments but they can’t make up for every other area it’s lacking in. Overall I’d say this episode is about as Evil as an Upstanding Citizen (1).
