Two rivals destined to battle; one of them a genius, the other not. No this isn’t Naruto, this is another flashback. How Evil is the ninth episode of Cells at Work?

This episode did something I thought was impossible. It made me like the two characters I didn’t really care about. I’m talking about Killer T and Helper T. They never really did anything to get me to care about them in the previous episodes. This episode changed all of that by providing us with a decent amount of their backstories. I mean I think we may have gotten a peek the last episode but that was a little too subtle.

This episode starts out with a confrontation between Killer T and Helper T about training methods. While they’re arguing about it, Scrapbook Cell leads us into their backstory by showing some recruits a picture of Killer T crying when he was a kid. From there we soon find out that Killer T and Helper T have been rivals since their school days. Helper T never uses more energy than needed while Killer T is always overdoing things, of course, it doesn’t help that Helper T is better than Killer T at everything either.

Not much changes as they get older either. Killer T is always working harder than everyone just to keep up with the grueling training and tests that their instructors put them through. All the training leads up to one final test – a test that will narrow the class down to just a handful of survivors. This is when we see Helper T do something that shows he doesn’t see Killer T as an enemy.

During Killer T’s test Helper T actually helps him get a passing grade. This has an interesting effect on Killer T. After the test he meets up with Helper T to talk about the test and his future as a T cell. Killer T tells Helper T that he’s not sure he can make it as a T cell because he has no confidence in himself. This is met by a friendly wake-up punch to the face.

Yeah, I had a feeling that’s how that would end. I’m surprised how touching their actual backstory was. I wasn’t expecting this to be as compelling as Red and White’s backstory but it did a pretty good job. I’m glad we got this episode. At least now they’re a bit more interesting. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought they were boring before.

Of course, now I get to talk about my favorite part of the episode. In modern day, there’s a little scene after Killer T and Helper T have stopped fighting. You see they finally realized that Scrapbook Cell has been showing the recruits their school photos and, well, they’re not happy. Just look at their faces. Priceless.

Overall I’d say this episode is about as Evil as a Super Villian! (10). This show is full of surprises so far. I’m a little concerned that the reason we’re getting all this backstory might be signaling the return of Cancer though. I just have this suspicion that he’s about to come back and wreck shop soon.
