Joseph got a lot more backstory this episode. How Evil is Mahoutsukai No Yome episode 23?

I know what I said about Joseph before. But dang it, I can’t really hate him anymore. He became the way he is now trying to help Cartaphilus a cursed man. Joseph tried everything to free him from the curse but nothing worked. On top of all of that, he was being bullied by people from his town for being a grave digger’s son. The amounting pressure broke him to the point that he gave up his own body to try and break the curse. He became one with Cartaphilus. The resulting pain from his now rotting body drove him to madness.
He started mutilating people and taking their body parts just so he could function and look for a way to break this curse. He seems to be the embodiment of “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.” I’m not saying what he’s doing isn’t evil, but even in his insanity, he’s trying to keep his promise to Cartaphilus. This flashback is something we see because Chise is now linked to Joseph. Joseph senses that she saw his past and isn’t happy about it either.
He tries to rip off Chise’s dragon arm. but gets interrupted when The Queen of Faeries teleports in with Elias. Joseph does a little summoning to even out the odds a little and then flees the scene as fast as he can. Got admit, he’s still one of the smartest antagonists I’ve seen. He knows when it’s time to leave at least. This time though, Chise, Ruth, and Elias give chase.
Mariel also made an appearance in this episode. She got scolded by her boss and told to go fix the mess she caused. She becomes a bull and allows Chise to ride her in order to catch Joseph. Chise hasn’t forgiven Elias or Ruth yet. She apparently needs their help to keep a promise. I wonder if the promise has to do with the Cartaphilus she met last episode.
Whatever the case it seems we have finally arrived at the final confrontation. I get the feeling that Chise is going to try and save Joseph like she did with the couple in the cat kingdom. The anticipation is killing me right now. I want to see the end of Joseph, but I want more of this show. I hope we get a season two, I would love to see where this would go after Joseph.
Overall this episode was about as Evil as a Super Villian (10). Everything has led up to this next episode. So far this series hasn’t let me down, but a bad ending could ruin it for a lot of people. I’m not expecting it to be a masterpiece or anything, but this series is already in my top ten anime. If you want to see another one that has made my list check out our reviews for Dagashi Kashi 2. It’s a lot of fun if you like over glorified ads. Well, that’s all I have for you today. Thanks for letting me waste your time, people.
Keep It Classy,
I went and read the latest chapter. Both the anime and manga are completely even now. So up to this point there’s been nothing anime original about what’s happening (beside’s apparently Mariel had a larger more in depth characterization that was skipped). So with next week’s episode airing, and next chapter being next month I’m hoping they will be more or less synced. The downside is either way you won’t see a season 2 for 3-5 years because it’s a monthly.
Ah, That kind of sucks. At least it’s had an awesome run so far.
