Did they just retcon what happened, last episode? How Evil is Hakyu Hoshin Engi episode 9?

So apparently Taikoubou’s favorite strategy finally worked. The mountain somehow managed to ram the island. Despite running into the shield and parts of the mountain exploding, last episode.  They literally changed how it happened in this one. Youzen managed to lower the shield after the collision. And there were no explosions this time either.

This show can’t even stay consistent. On top of that, we got another totally unrelated scene with Taikoubou talking to the bat guy for some reason. Not sure if it was a future flash or not but without context I just ignored it. At least Taikoubou’s faith in Youzen wasn’t misplaced.

He beat one of the commanders by unleashing his full power and just barely managed to push the off switch for the shield. Unfortunately, now he needs to be rescued. And our favorite idiot is just stupid enough to charge the enemy yet again. Seriously, Taikoubou needs a new strategy, it’s only worked one time so far and that was because of Youzen.

Taikoubou’s charge goes about as well as you might expect, with him walking right into a trap. It’s another subspace thing. It seems all of the commanders here have their own special one. This one turns people into toys if they lose a game to its master. Taikoubou’s mount-friend-thing finds that out the hard way. Taikoubou takes up the challenge to restore his friend.

Taikoubou tries to cheat to win a game of Concentration, which is a basic card memory game. His plan appears to be going smoothly until it’s his opponents turn. Turns out his opponent can manipulate anything within this space by willpower alone.  In other words, Taikoubou can’t win.

By the time Taikoubou realizes this, it’s already too late. He gets turned into the ugliest toy I’ve ever seen. I don’t know what it is with anime having useless protagonists this season. (CVoyage: Um… wut? There’s only, like, one other one! Thy hatred doth lead you to exaggerate, my friend). I’ve had to recap two of them so far. Overall this episode was about as Evil as a Petty Criminal (2). Taikoubou only succeeded with the mountain thing because of an ally. His rush headlong into the enemy strategy needs to stop and he needs to actually think.

This show is getting old real fast. Taikoubou is so stupid his allies keep telling him charging the enemy is a bad idea especially when you’re the commander, but he keeps charging anyway. I give up. If you want to watch something that has a good protagonist check out CVoyage’s reviews for Toji no Miko. It’s a way better show than whatever this is. Well, that’s all I have for you today.
