RWBY Volume 5 – Episode 14 Recap (Is It Evil?)

Well, it’s finally over. How Evil is RWBY Volume 5 episode 14?

RWBY
Studio: Rooster Teeth
Genre: Action, Fantasy, Science Fiction

After this less than stellar volume, I’m glad to be taking a break from this series. I’ve been a fan for awhile. But it’s suffered being too action orientated before and it has the exact opposite problem now. It’s actually worse now than it was before. This is an action series. While it’s okay to have a little drama, that shouldn’t push aside the amazing action scenes we’ve come to expect from previous seasons.

Okay, I’ll get off that soapbox. We start right where we left off; the White Fang getting arrested. Blake and Adam have a little spat but she one-shots him. Why build him up as a threat in the third volume if he was just going to go out like a chump? He fled the scene like a pansy. Soon after that Yang has her “talk” with Raven. She must have rolled high on her persuasion check because she actually talked her into giving up the relic.

I was expecting at least a brief fight, so that was a little disappointing. While they chatted, the camera kept changing, making me think Cinder would attack. But apparently she dead. At least until they bring her back through some convoluted plot device they’ve neglected to bring up yet. And if they do bring her back, I’m going to be pissed. She deserved to go out that easy.

Back on the surface, Cinder’s fan club is still trying to hold their own. Emerald, in particular, keeps yelling about how when Cinder returns they will all pay. Yeah, it was just sad to watch. Her hopes dreams and aspirations were dashed as the elevator rose with only Yang on it. After the loser squad left, the girls finally reunited.

For what’s it’s worth I did enjoy most of this volume. The Blake episodes are a chore to watch though. The action scenes, or lack thereof, is now only a small part of the problem. We had whole episodes of exposition that are, for the most part, unneeded. Good news is they have had both extremes in this show now. Maybe they can find a balance to make this show better.

I would say this episode was about as evil as a Career Criminal (3) While the volume was about as evil as The Dark Side (6). This volume could’ve been so much better. Don’t worry, I’ll still cover the next one. If you want a more balanced light-hearted show, check out our review for Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san it’s a riot so far. Well, that’s all I have for you today. Thanks for letting me waste your time, people.

Keep It Classy,
Evil Bob
