Overlord II – Episode 2 Review (Evil Anime-tion)

New episode, new characters, same problems.

Overlord II
Studio: Madhouse
Genre: Fantasy, Game, Isekai

CVoyage: One week ago, in a galaxy far far away…

CVoyage: Yeah, no such luck. But we are only two episodes in, so maybe the three episode rule can come into play?

EvilBob: I mean sure but in the meantime…

CVoyage: Yeah, this is rough.

EvilBob: Sandpapper rough. Where do we begin?

Cvoyage: How about we begin start with the fact that it’s once again 100% talking and Momonga isn’t even in it.

EvilBob: It seems like the things covered in these first two episodes could’ve been shared with us in one episode, if they cut down on most of the talking.

CVoyage: I dunno. Last time it just felt like they were just talkin’ to talk. When you think about it, how much actual information did we get, last time? At least this time there was a point to it.

EvilBob: Yeah, but last time we had the main character in it.

“Why didn’t I show up in this episode?”

CVoyage: Eh. Touche. To its credit, though, there was that one funny scene around the middle.

EvilBob: Oh, so you mean exactly like last time?

CVoyage: Well, it could be worse. It could be the first few episodes of Black Clover.

EvilBob: Critical Hit! I hope they have plenty of Burn Heals… and possibly some potions.

CVoyage: After the beating, the fandom’s been giving it? Maybe some Revives.

EvilBob: Maybe we should get back to Overlord?

CVoyage: Oh… Right. You know there’s a problem when talking about Black Clover is more interesting than this.

Black Clover Noelle Lame

EvilBob: That’s so true it’s sad. Hopefully, this show will start to pick up next episode, if not I know what to watch when I need to sleep.

CVoyage: You know the really sad part? I can’t even get wordy about this. It’s that uninteresting.

EvilBob: I’d say this episode was about as evil as a Career Criminal (3). I had expectations that this episode would be better than the last one. I was sooo wrong. I gave the first episode a higher rating than it deserved, out of respect for the last season. This one was just as bad, if not worse, than the first episode. We don’t even get to see the main character do anything.

CVoyage: Pass. It’s just. So. Boring. Don’t get me wrong, the stuff about the lizard people is genuinely interesting. And that scene in the middle was actually funny. But.

EvilBob: Comma.

CVoyage: Shut up. Not having the main character in the episode hurts. Bad. And if you’re going to have an episode where everything is talking, at least make it engaging. The last season had an intensity to its dialogue. Everything from the music selection to the lighting made each conversation pull you in. Here it’s played with but not enough. Also, the humor’s just been lacking. One or two scenes for a whole episode of a show like this really doesn’t cut it. Sorry, not sorry.

EvilBob: Yep Burn Heals.

CVoyage: If you want something far simpler yet somehow more interesting than this, check out our review of Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san.

“Man, we’re even beating Overlord? How bad is this season?”

EvilBob: How does a show about childhood romance beat out a fantasy series? Watch Overlord 2 to find out. It’s Simulcast on Crunchyroll Tuesdays at 10:00am EST.

CVoyage: And that’s basically all we got on this.

EvilBob: Thanks for letting us waste your time, people.

CVoyage: Thanks, as always, for reading, folks. Keep up the awesome.

EvilBob: And keep it classy.

CVoyage: Take care.

I’d ALMOST accept this if it were advertised as some OVA bundled with the LNs but we’re watching Overlord Season 2, not Overlord the Lizardman Chronicles OVA. Even the OST is a letdown. I’d take a beach episode over this. Madhouse has the animation potential and this series has the hype. Where is the budget going? How is the studio behind One Punch Man phoning this in? I’ve seen new IPs from unproven studios (Tanya the Evil) perform far better than Scalies the Anime.
