How To Keep A Mummy – Premiere First Impression (Evil Anime-tion)

D’aaawwww!

Kashiwagi Sora is living a normal high school student life, when his “adventurer” father sends him a mummy from his travels in Egypt! Sora balks at the letter from his crazy dad (“I found a cool mummy, so I decided to leave it with you, son!”) at first, but the mummy that emerges from inside the huge coffin is a mere 12 centimeters tall–small enough to fit in the palm of his hand… Not only that, it’s shy, a crybaby, and most of all, heckin’ cute. And so, Sora and ends up keeping the mummy, naming his new little buddy “Mii-kun.” But living with a mummy might be easier said than done…! -Crunchyroll

How To Keep A Mummy
Studio: 8 bit
Genre: Comedy, Supernatural

CVoyage: I think that may, hands down, be the second most adorable thing we’ve seen, all season. And mind you, this is the season of “Cute Girls Doing Things.”

EvilBob: And it’s not even human(?)! Of course, it may just be more effective to me, as a pet owner.

CVoyage: It was also surprisingly funny.

EvilBob: Albeit inconsistent.

CVoyage: Eh?

EvilBob: I’m just saying. When he got the package, it was shaped like a sarcophagus, yet it was shaped like a normal old English casket after he unwrapped it…

CVoyage: Bob.

EvilBob: Or how the mummy was strong enough to open the casket, then was too weak to do any of the chores…

How To Keep A Mummy

Seriously. HOW?

CVoyage: Bob…

EvilBob: And then there was-

CVoyage: BOB.

EvilBob: What?

CVoyage: It’s a 5-inch mummy that barks, understands Japanese, eats and drinks. Not to mention how his father was even able to ship it in the first place. You’re thinking about this way too hard.

EvilBob: …Fair enough. I am curious about one thing, though. What else is his dad gonna ship to him?

How To Keep A Mummy

The fact that that girl has a dragon makes me instantly more interested in her than the other two.

CVoyage: Eh. Probably the other cute little monster pets in the OP. Oddly enough, there’s also not a lot to say about this one. It’s funny. It’s cute. But there wasn’t a whole lot else to go with. Sora’s a likable protagonist. He’s a clever guy, smart, responsible, all around he’s pretty cool.

EvilBob: I like his friend, too. The guy scares the crap out of poor Mii-kun, though. Hm. Reminds me of someone I know.

CVoyage: Hm? Who?

EvilBob: I dunno. Someone with a dark, brooding presence that alarms animals.

CVoyage: …Why do I get the feeling you’re making fun of me?

EvilBob: What, me? No! I’d never do that!

CVoyage: Of course, you wouldn’t. After all, you wouldn’t want to summon the wrath of the almighty editor, now would you?

EvilBob: Uh… what’re we talkin’ about?

How To Keep A Mummy

“Scary…”

CVoyage: Good boy. And speaking of pets, I can’t really think of more to say on this one. How To Keep A Mummy is just an adorable, funny time. Nothing especially fantastic, but plenty of fun, and a whole lot of “Awww.” You’ll have to brush your teeth after watching it, because this is most definitely the best kind of Junk Food.

EvilBob: Aside from the little inconsistencies I mentioned earlier-

CVoyage: Which I’m pretty sure were intentional.

EvilBob: Right. Aside from those, the episode was a little slow-moving. It also wasn’t overly impressive. It was reasonably funny, but not gut-bustingly riotous. It’s also not even close to the cutest thing we’ve gotten out of the season. So I’d say it’s about as Evil as a Killer Robot Army (8).

CVoyage: If you wanna see the actual funniest, cutest thing we’ve seen all season, I’d say to go for our tag team review of Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san.

Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san

“Onegai?”

EvilBob: Or, if you want to see more adorable, supernatural pets, How To Keep A Mummy is Simulcast on Crunchyroll, Thursdays at 3:00pm EST. And that’s basically it. Thanks for letting us waste your time, people.

CVoyage: As always, thanks for reading, folks. Keep up the awesome.

EvilBob: And keep it classy.

CVoyage: Take care.

I have to agree. This was pretty adorable. Okay, you can’t think too hard about the premise, but the execution was nicely done and this stayed pretty cute for the whole first episode.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
