For once my calling an anime “Tooth-Rottingly Sweet” isn’t a metaphor for cuteness!
Dagashi Kashi is one of those weird shows I like despite knowing full well that it isn’t good for me. It is nothing but a hyperactive romp, yet is also bizarrely reserved. It may have something to do with the setting and cast. This nature somehow prevents the show from reaching those KonoSuba levels of “Oh my god, SHUT UP FOR FIVE MINUTES.” Also, calm down. I do like KonoSuba. I just can’t stand to be exposed to large amounts of it at a time. Dagashi Kashi never had that effect on me. It knows when to turn off the funny switch, or at least when to be a little quieter. And now we know when that second season is making its debut. Dagashi Kashi 2 premieres on January 11, 2018.
Of course, there’s one other aspect of the show that holds me. It’s more or less a glorified ad. Ordinarily, this is annoying. But here’s the thing. If you’re gonna use your show to advertise to me, at least put in a little effort to make it entertaining. Us folks in the States are especially familiar with this concept. Particularly due to a mysterious period known as “The 80s.” Transformers, He-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the list goes on. Then, of course, you have my own favorite franchise in Pokemon. Yes, the anime is fundamentally flawed in a number of ways. But it is successful and has been doing its job for some 20 years.
There are ways to fail at this, of course. What you don’t want to do is something like Love is a Cocktail. Really, guys? A series of minisodes that exist as nothing more than a way to show off recipes for drinks? That’s where Dagashi Kashi shines, though. Yes, it’s a glorified ad (or history lesson, depending on how you view it). But it manages to A) make those portions entertaining by way of having them be so outlandish, and B) doing other things alongside all of that.
All in all, I’m looking forward to another season of this. Actually, the upcoming anime season is generally filled with a lot of things I’m really interested in. What are you looking forward to? Feel free to leave a comment. As always, thanks for reading.
Keep up the awesome, and take care
Chris V.
