Dang, this girl really did have a bad life. How Evil Is Mahoutsukai No Yome’s second episode?
Mahoutsukai no Yome
Studio: Wit Studio
Genre: Drama, Romance, Magic
I’m noticing a pattern with the episodes. Both episodes started with flashbacks of horrible things that happened to Chise in the past, but the anime doesn’t stop at that. It does something to counter what we just saw, usually by using comedy to take the edge off. They actually do it twice in this episode.
An example would be the flashback about Chise’s mom and her apparent suicide… which Chise evidently witnessed. We are shown this right away and immediately following this, Elias takes her shopping. Sounds normal, doesn’t it? Well, we meet someone who The Thorn Mage actually appears to be scared of. Enter Angelica Burley.
Angelica is a magic shopkeeper that Elias knows. She is an expert in all kinds of things and she carries the supplies that Elias needs to start teaching Chise magic. She is also a mother figure to Chise, as well as an actual mother to her own little girl. After asking Chise if Elias has done anything “strange” Chise tells her about the bathing incident followed by the marriage proposal. The result? Angelica gut-punching Elias, and kicking him out of her shop. So she basically just punched what may as well be Cthulhu, for all it matters.
Yeah, she kind of scares me too. Well anyway, you get my point. After this, we get another flashback, which is followed by another awkward moment. I think it’s relatively safe to say Elias is just not good around people. Every time he interacts with people it tends to end with them picking on him in some way, or him getting gut-punched… looking at you, Angelica. Oh, I totally forgot, Elias can change his face to a normal-ish one, but Chise says it looks fake.
I normally hate cliffhangers, but this episode’s cliffhanger was pretty good. Of course, that might be because it involved dragons or the fact that we are probably going to see Elias fight in the next episode. Seriously, I’m pretty sure he isn’t going to be happy about Chise’s abduction.
Oh, I still have to rate this thing don’t I? I’d say this is still as evil as a Super Villain! Everything is still on a good note. Nothing to really complain about, except the wait of course. Check it out for yourself. Mahoutsukai no Yome simulcasts on Crunchyroll, Saturdays at 1:30pm EDT
Well, that’s all I have for you for now. Be sure to check out the rest of our anime reviews. And thanks for letting me waste your time, people.
