I am… so confused, right now. What was that? How Evil Is the premiere of Dies Irae?

I can honestly say I have no idea what was happening in the first episode of Dies Irae. I think it takes place in a fantasy version of Nazi Germany where they still lost, but their version of Hitler lived? Well, let’s talk about what was right with the show first.

The show’s art is great. Even the weirder things, like a floating skeleton… city… train… thing, looked good. And the action scenes… were amazing. Beautifully animated, and so fun to watch. Aaand that’s… pretty much it. Yeah, Chris, I got a weird one too. Completely different kind of weird, but… still weird.

Time to talk about where I think it needs to improve. For one thing, the plot. There isn’t one. As far as I can tell, the episode is basically nothing but setup. And even that is all over the place. I still have no idea what was actually happening. There were events. Characters were doing things. But there wasn’t really any sense of rhyme or reason. And it didn’t help that it seemed to jump to modern times randomly. Then the random fight scene with two unknown characters had no meaning. They died without us even learning anything of value. We didn’t even get a reason for them to fight. It just happened.

Now the main character. He’s kind of a jerk. He punched his own team members who were normal humans from what we could tell. To make matters worse we see him two-shot, and even one-shot what looked like super soldiers. I can’t even tell you the guy’s motivations. On top of that apparently, he has powers that could end the world. Because of course, he does. Weirdness aside, this episode just didn’t make a whole lot of sense. The only thing I know for sure is that there are superpowers and that the setting was the beginning of WWII. Other than those details, I have no idea what going on.

What do I rate something like this? I don’t think I even have a rating for something like this yet. It fails to meet even the base standards for things I watch. I guess I have no choice but to say it’s as evil as a Super Hero… I mean, if that main guy was one of the villains, maaaybe-

…Ooooh. Okay. Still stupid, but I can be more forgiving, then. I’ll say… Henchman level, I guess. Lot of stupid, looot of confusing, but a little bit of promise, in there. Maybe when the show actually starts, it’ll be better? But beginning on a prequel was a dumb idea.
